16 NOVEMBER 2018: ATHENS, GREECE & TEL AVIV, ISRAEL

An El Al flight from New York to Tel Aviv was delayed and, realising that the flight would not reach Israel before the Sabbath commenced, the crew opted to land in Athens, to the frustration of those on board. Orthodox Jewish passengers will not travel on the Sabbath. However, some of the religious passengers later elected to sue Israel’s national airline for nearly $2.5 million, and demanded that the airline publicly admit that claims of passenger violence following the diversion were false.
