Airline insurance companies that paid out compensation for the hijacking of EgyptAir flight 468 from Cairo to Athens in 1985, which took the lives of 58 people, may be able to receive compensation from the Syrian President Bashar Assad and his regime, who are widely believed to have supported the hijacking. Allegedly, Assad has around £161 million in assets within the UK that are frozen, and the high court in London ruled that the location of these assets can be revealed by the Treasury, overruling EU sanctions that prevented the disclosure of the assets.
