Mahmoud Khayat, 34, was found guilty of attempting to blow up a Sydney to Abu Dhabi flight in July 2017, by hiding explosives in a meat grinder. Khaled Khayat, 51, Mahmoud’s brother was found guilty for his part in the plot in May this year. They have been linked to Islamic State. Unknowingly, another brother, Amer Khayat, would have carried the explosives onto the flight if the luggage was not flagged due to its weight.
