A truck loaded with monkeys crashed while en route to a Center for Disease Control (CDC)-approved quarantine facility after arriving Friday morning at New York’s Kennedy Airport from Mauritius. A pickup collided with a dump truck on the Pennsylvania highway which led to the truck with the monkeys crashing. Numerous monkeys escaped after the crash. The dump truck, crashed into the monkey transport truck, tearing off the front panel of the trailer. Crates with the live animals then fell out onto the road, some breaking open. The CDC provided “technical assistance” to state police in Pennsylvania. Only one monkey was still on the loose as of Saturday morning – the day after the crash – which prompted the Pennsylvania Game Commission and other agencies to launch a search for it. All of the cynomolgus macaque monkeys were eventually found, but three were euthanized as a result of the incident, Kristen Nordlund, a spokesperson with the CDC and Prevention, said in a statement. It was not clear why three had to euthanized but Nordlund said the procedures were done according to American Veterinary Medical Association guidelines.
