4 MAY 2020: EL BARDALE, SOMALIA

An African Express Airways plane carrying aid supplies to fight COVID-19 was shot down having allegedly been targeted with a rocket-propelled grenade; all six crew members were killed. The plane had departed from Mogadishu and landed at Baidoa, and then departed for El Bardale. The aircraft allegedly aborted landing due to wildlife on the runway; it was then shot down during the second attempt at landing. A report from the African Union Force Commander in Somalia states that the aircraft may have been shot down by Ethiopian troops who feared that it could be carrying out a suicide attack. The report was leaked on Twitter and its authenticity is unknown. The crash is under investigation by Somali, Kenyan and Ethiopian officials.
