The Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO) stated that they intend to fine British Airways £183.39m, 1.5% of their annual turnover in 2017, for a data breach that started in June 2018 and affected an estimated 500,000 customers. Hackers diverted users of British Airways website and app to a fraudulent site and stole various personal details including payment card details, names, addresses and travel booking information. The ICO stated that British Airways were responsible due to ‘poor security arrangements’ and that they were able to set this record fine because of new GDPR rules in the UK which allows them to fine up to 4% of annual turnover.
