Tanker Fire in Cuba Continues to Burn

A huge fire has been burning for days near the port city of Matanzas in Cuba, a supertanker storage facility. Unable to get the fire under control the first day, Cuba asked for assistance and Mexico and Venezuela sent teams to help fight the fire. The U.S. offered technical advice, according to reports.

The fire erupted Friday evening, August 5,  when lightning hit one of the et storage tanks at the location. The facility is located 60 miles east of Havana. The fire spread and reached a second tank on Saturday. More than 121 people were injured in the second blast, five in critical condition. One person was reported dead and dozens of firefighters remain missing. More than 1,000 civilians were evacuated from nearby areas.
