A Libyan man convicted of involvement in bombing Pan Am flight 103, the crashed in Lockerbie, Scotland during a flight from London to New York in 1988, was denied an appeal mounted by the family. The bombing killed 259 people aboard the plane and an additional 11 people on the ground.
Abdelbaset al-Megrahi was sentenced to life in prison but he and his family maintained the innocence of the former intelligence officer. He lost an earlier appeal in 2009. He was released from prison after a cancer diagnosis and died in Libya in 2012
