Secretary of Transportation Pete Buttigieg viewed the current status of the tunnel connecting New York and New Jersey and said the Biden administration was committed to getting a new train tunnel built under the Hudson River.
Sec Buttigieg saw the decaying 100-plus year old Hudson tunnel the week of June 26. He toured riding in an Amtrak car with other officials from New York and New Jersey. The project has been on the list of urgent needs but the approximate $11.6 billion price tag has caused delays. At a press conference in New York’s Penn Station he said the project was “vitally important to the national economy.”
The recently agreed upon infrastructure package includes enough money to cover the federal government’s part of the amount, according to Sen. Chuck Schumer, who was present at the event.
