Policeman Received Suspended Sentence For Death of Child

Recently, a Belgian police officer was given an one-year suspended prison sentence in the shooting death of a 2-year-old child who was in a van being driven by suspected migrant smugglers.

The death was ruled accidental but the Belgian court found the officer held a share of the responsibility, resulting in the suspended sentence. The officer was in high speed pursuit of suspect smugglers and the child, who was in the van, was unknowingly shot in the pursuit. The van swerved and the officer tried to shoot out the tires. The incident occurred in May of 2018.
