An SA Airlink pilot was accused of sexually harassing a flight attendant, Rethabile, during a trip to Ascension Island on 23 July. Rethabile, who is married to a woman, made her complaint at OR Tambo Police Station two weeks afterwards, claiming that the pilot had approached her during a stopover in St Helena. She said, “He stated that I am lesbian because I have never had a taste of a real man and he wants to show me what a real man is.” She claims he also unzipped his pants and took out his penis. Allegedly traumatised, she unconsciously inscribed her father’s surname on the leather seat with her finger, an action which resulted in her being dismissed by the airline after the pilot reported her for ‘vandalising the aircraft’. She instigated a case of unfair dismissal.
