20 AUGUST 2020: CHARLEROI, BELGIUM

The widow of Jozef Chovanec, 38, a Slovakian citizen who died in police custody after being arrested for disruptive behaviour at Charleroi Airport on 24 February 2018, has released footage of his treatment by police officers. While in police custody, Chovanec slammed his head against his cell wall. Six officers arrived to restrain him. The footage shows officers pinning him down with a blanket over his head and one officer sitting on his ribcage for 16 minutes. Another officer danced and made a Nazi salute. Chovanec died in hospital the next day. Chovanec’s widow released the footage in the hope that the investigation into her husband’s death in 2018 would be expedited.
