25 JULY 2019: MADAGASCAR

Alana Cutland, 19, opened a light aircraft’s door whilst it was at 5,000ft and then seemingly jumped to her death. Cutland, a student at Cambridge University, was in Madagascar on a natural sciences internship. Cutland’s parents had hired the aircraft and sent a family friend, Ruth Johnson, 51, to Madagascar to bring Cutland home as her parents were worried about her state of mind. Johnson, and the pilot, attempted to stop Cutland from jumping. It is believed that Cutland may have suffered a psychotic episode due to an adverse reaction to anti-malaria drugs she was taking. Her body was found by villagers on 6 August in a rural area.
