Stephen Mukangi, a General Service Unit officer, was shot and killed whilst manning the watchtower at Wilson Airport. Samson Morongo Nesco, who manned the watchtower with Mukangi, was later charged with his murder. Morongo had claimed that he and Mukangi were approached by two men dressed as police officers who asked for assistance as their car had broken down and that, on their way to the vehicle, two other men dressed as police officers had emerged from the bushes and a shootout ensued leaving Mukangi dead. Morongo claimed he escaped with a gunshot wound to the leg and the terrorists had stolen their AK47 rifles. However, forensic evidence – gunshot residue on Morongo’s clothes – allegedly shows that Morongo fired the weapon. The rifles have not been recovered by authorities.
