Taiwanese Passenger Train Derails Leaving 50 Dead

A train traveling from Taipei through a tunnel near Hualien in Taiwan reportedly hit a vehicle on the tracks and then derailed. The train was traveling on the eastern coast of the country heading south en route to Taitung when the incident occurred.

Images from the accident show some of the train cars crumpled and others ripped apart. Rescue workers were challenged to reach some passengers as they searched for the injured and dead. A truck was reported to have slid down from a construction site onto the tracks causing the train to derail upon striking it.
