29 March 2022: Kaduna, Nigeria

An attack on a passenger train, the second since October happened on 29 March. Armed rebels in the northeast and bandits who have kidnapped hundreds for ransom in the center and northwest parts of the country have left the population scared. Nigerian government officials said a passenger train headed left Abuja headed to the northern city of Kaduna was trapped and attacked by armed bandits. The attackers reportedly planted explosives to halt the train, forced their way on board and gunshots were reported. The NRC suspended operations on Abuja-Kaduna route temporarily.

3 June 2022: Burgrain District, Germany

A train derailment ina Bavarian Alpine resort in southern Germany killed five and injured 30. Rescuers used ladders to reach passengers who became trapped. “In the serious train accident, as of 3:32 pm (1532 GMT), four people were fatally injured,” a police statement said. The train was “very crowded and many people were using it, hence the high number of injure,” according to Stefan Sonntag of Upper Bavaria’s police force. The train departed Garmisch-Partenkirchen for Munich, when the accident took place. The operator, Deutsche Bahn, has not yet determined the cause of the accident.

8 June 2022: Tabas, Iran

A train derailed in eastern Iran, killing 21 people and injuring 87 more, according to reports. The train was part of state-run Islamic Republic Railway and was carrying around 350 people when it derailed near the town of Tabas, 340 miles southeast of Tehran, on its way to the city of Yazd. That route began as an overnight train out of Iran’s holy city of Mashhad. Rescue teams including ambulances and helicopters arrived at the crash site which is remote. Aerial footage of the disaster showed train cars toppled over, with rescuers trying to care for the injured.

24 May 2022: New York, New York

A man was charged in an unprovoked killing of a train rider in May. After the shooting, the man instructed other passengers to “put their cellphones away” the prosecutor told a judge on Wednesday. Andrew Abdullah, 25, was charged with second-degree murder in the death of the passenger, Daniel Enriquez. Appearing in Manhattan Criminal Court on Wednesday, Abdullah was ordered held without bail.

31 May 2022: Kyogle, NSW Australia

The Australian Transportation Safety Bureau has begun an investigation into the derailment of freight train number 2BS4 near Kyogle, New South Wales, on 31 May 2022. At approximately 1:00am on May 31, 2022, freight train 2BS4, operated by Pacific National derailed 11 wagons near Kyogle, New South Wales. The train was traveling towards Sydney on a single line section of the North Coast line at the time of the derailment. There were no injuries but a significant amount of damage to wagons and track infrastructure occurred. The investigation is being led by the NSW Office of Transport Safety Investigations (OTSI). OTSI conducts rail investigations in NSW on behalf of the ATSB under the Transport Safety Investigation Act 2003. OTSI investigators have begun collecting evidence from involved and other interested parties to determine the factors contributing to the accident. This evidence will include: CCTV footage, data logger information, recent track inspection and maintenance, wagon build and maintenance history and actions of the train crew.

22 May 2022: Manhattan, New York

A 48-year-old man was shot in the chest while riding a Q train in Lower Manhattan, the police said. Investigators believe the attack was unprovoked. The gunman fired once hitting Daniel Enriquez in the chest and killing him, a police spokesman later said. The gunman fled after the train pulled into the station. A 25-year-old man, Andrew Abdullah, was sought by the New York police in the shooting death of Enriquez and was taken into custody several days later (see entry below for more).

29 April 2022: Manhattan, New York

Two people were killed when a subway train hit them at a Manhattan station, according to local police said. This was the latest in a rise in deaths involving “unauthorized people venturing onto the tracks.” The collision happened around 10:45 a.m., when a southbound No. 1 train pulled into the 145th Street station in Hamilton Heights. A man and woman who were on the tracks at the time, were struck authorities said. The two were pronounced dead at the scene. The police said the victims were walking through the tunnel and may have been homeless.

19 April 2022: Times Square Station, New York

Martial Simon, a schizophrenic man accused of fatally shoving Michelle Go in front of a subway train in January, will be sent to a locked psychiatric facility indefinitely, after prosecutors agreed not to contest that he is unfit to stand trial. Simon, 61, was declared unfit by Bellevue Hospital Center psychiatrists according to his lawyer. Simon had been held at Bellevue since his arrest in January. He was charged with second-degree murder in the death of Go, a consultant at Deloitte.

25 May 2022: New York, New York

Police rescued a blind man who had fallen onto the track just as a train was pulling into the station. Body cam footage shows the officers running towards the man who struggled to climb back onto the platform. In the image the man’s cane can be seen.
